Weddings
A “fixer” who recruited desperate “brides” at the school gates for sham marriages to illegal immigrants is on the run after failing to turn up at court for sentencing.
The Polish mother-of-four Andzelina Surmaj was given three years and eight months in jail in her absence which she will serve if or when she is arrested.
Her partner in crime, the Czech national Milan Cina, 38, was jailed for five years at Burnley crown court.
Both acted as brokers, charging illegal immigrants thousands of pounds to arrange bogus weddings to EU nationals so they could stay in the UK.
The pair admitted their part in arranging six sham marriages in east Lancashire and Manchester between December 2008 and July 2009. It is thought they could have been involved in around 40 bogus ceremonies in all.
Surmaj, 30, targeted fellow eastern European women desperate for money she met at the gates of Whetley primary school in Bradford where her children were pupils.
The scam involved already married women getting wed, with interchangeable brides and witnesses, some already related, at multiple weddings and was likened to “the plot of a bad soap opera” by one immigration official.
Surmaj and Cina themselves acted as witnesses to some weddings, and were caught on camera in the background at several ceremonies.
Passing sentence, Judge Beverley Lunt said: “It is clear from the evidence in this case that this was a well-organised commercial enterprise designed to defeat the immigration laws of this country.
“You were both responsible for arranging multiple sham marriages in return for substantial sums of money being paid by Nigerian men. Some of that money was then paid on to the Czech women who were persuaded to take part in these sham marriages.”
Marriages
Surmaj, formerly of Girlington Road, Bradford, West Yorkshire, who has been in the UK for 12 years, admitted assisting unlawful immigration by organising four bogus weddings.
She also admitted giving a false address at a sham wedding where she was the bride at St Peter’s church in Newbold, Rochdale, and possessing a fake Czech Republic ID card.
Cina, formerly of Lister Gardens, Bradford, admitted assisting unlawful immigration by jointly organising the four sham weddings with Surmaj and also pleaded guilty to acting as a witness at another ceremony.
A warrant was issued for the arrest of Surmaj.
Concerns were first raised by local clergy at two churches, St Peter’s and St Andrew’s, both in Accrington, east Lancashire, in late 2009.
But once Surmaj and Cina felt the vicar was becoming suspicious they moved churches, also targeting All Saints in Clayton-le-Moors in Lancashire and St Peter’s in Levenshulme, Manchester.
A “routine check” by the UK Border Agency on one suspect wedding soon uncovered an “unusual demographic pattern” of weddings in the Accrington area between west Africans and eastern Europeans.
Further inquiries revealed there were 44 “marriages of doubt” – with investigations still ongoing.
Up to now, 18 of those weddings have been investigated and 36 individuals charged with 86 separate offences.

Weddings in Paradise: The PDN’s annual bridal showcase returns tomorrow
Planning all the details for your upcoming big day might seem endless but the Pacific Daily News has you covered.
Head to the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort any time between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. tomorrow for PDN’s 12th annual Weddings in Paradise Show. The show is designed to be a “one-stop shop” for brides- and grooms-to-be planning for their special day, says Lourissa Leon Guerrero, PDN’s assistant marketing manager.
“It’s a time for brides and grooms to go to one location to meet with all the vendors that we can get in there for their wedding,” she says.
“This is where they can take away ideas and possibly make appointments and pick up samples and information from the different vendors.”
The variety of vendors includes wedding apparel companies, photographers, gyms — for those thinking about getting in shape before their big day, limousine companies, bakeries, DJs and even stage-setting companies, Leon Guerrero says.
Also, be on the lookout for The Bridal Guide 2012, inserted in tomorrow’s edition of the Pacific Daily News — 64 pages of wedding fashions, cakes, rings, stories, photos and more. Copies of the 2012 guide will be available for pickup at Weddings in Paradise, while supplies last.
Fashion shows
Fashion shows
Weddings in Paradise also will feature two fashion shows for your wedding, bridal and entourage needs from Cory’s Fashion, Watabe Weddings and World Fashions, along with live hairstyle demonstrations and makeup by Hair Town and Salon Paradis.
Wedding cake baker Laling Pangelinan is one of the many vendors who will be on hand at the show to guide couples through their wedding-planning needs.
“I try to match the cake with the personality of the person, the bride or the groom,” Pangelinan says. “It could be a hobby, something that they like, and I also encourage them to match the decor of the party.”
With more than 25 years experience in her pocket, Pangelinan will be strutting her stuff against Crown Bakery and Sugarnomics during the show’s cake decorating contest.
There will be live entertainment by Reed Meyer, Cantate and a latin dance demonstration by David and Tomoe Peele, a husband-and-wife team.
Around 4 p.m. Weddings in Paradise also will reveal the winner of Bridal Boot Camp Guam Season 2. Four young brides-to-be have spent the last 10 weeks hitting the treadmill at Kontenda’s Gym and working with trainer Terry DeBold in the PDN contest to drop weight and get healthier before their big day. The winner will take home a prize package including: a wedding dress from Iridescent Boutique valued up to $1,200; bridal hair, makeup and nails from Entre Nous; a one-night stay and breakfast for two at Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort; a bridal bouquet from Nichol’s Boutique; limo service from Paradise Limousine; a spa package from Oxygene; a restaurant certificate from Diva Café; and a one-year membership to Kontenda’s.
Honeymoon prize
But the contestants aren’t the only ones with a chance to win during Weddings in Paradise.
The event also features a bonus for couples who plan to get hitched in the near future. United Air Lines will be conducting a drawing for a honeymoon in Manila. Bring a supporting document for your upcoming wedding, including reservations or receipts from a church, hotel or florist for your wedding day, to enter and play the honeymoon trivia game at the United booth, Leon Guerrero says.
The winner will be announced at the end of the show and you must be present to win.

In court yesterday, defense Attorney Jeff Warfield said Quinata was a perfect candidate for a suspended sentence, but Assistant Attorney General Elizabeth Vasiliades asked for Quinata to serve three years.
Vasiliades noted that it had taken Quinata more than two years to sign a plea agreement, which is a sign that she was reluctant to take responsibility for her actions. Even after the plea agreement, Quinata told probation officers she had done nothing wrong, Vasiliades said.
“When push comes to shove, in front of the court, when facing jail time, Ms. Quinata shows remorse,” the prosecutor said.
Quinata sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl during a friendly gathering in the summer of 2009, according to Superior Court of Guam documents.
A small group was playing “Spin the Bottle” at an apartment in Yigo when Quinata pulled the teenage girl into a bedroom, promising that she only wanted to talk, court documents state. The sexual assault allegedly involved penetration, court documents state.
“The victim told the defendant to stop several times, but the defendant continued her actions,” court documents state.
In court yesterday, Vasiliades said a statement from the victim wasn’t available. The victim’s mother has stated the girl gets distraught when the sexual assault case is mentioned.
A suspended sentence means that Quinata will not have to serve her year in prison unless she violates court conditions over the next few years. If she is re-arrested, a judge can choose to enforce the suspended sentence.
Woman
Woman sentenced in sexual assault of girl.
A woman who confessed to sexually assaulting a teenage girl will not spend another day behind bars.
Jezebel Rhea Quinata, 23, was sentenced to a year in prison during a Superior Court of Guam hearing yesterday, but Judge Anita Sukola chose to suspend that entire sentence. Quinata spent 35 days in jail after her arrest in 2009, but she has not been detained since.
“I know that I made a mistake. … I wish I never went with that person, because what she said changed my whole life,” Quinata said, weeping as she spoke in court. “I want to say I’m sorry to that person.”
Sukola said she was hesitant to send Quinata back to jail because the single mother is raising a 6-year-old daughter. Jail time would
create “extreme hardship” for the child, Sukola said.
“You can cry rivers and rivers of tears,” Sukola said as the sentencing hearing ended. “You’ve been given an opportunity here. But you will have a felony conviction for the rest of your life and you will have to register for the sex offender registry.”
Quinata could have spent a lot more time in prison.
The suspect was initially charged with three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, or rape, which carries a sentencing range of 15 years to life behind bars.
Last November, Quinata pleaded down to third-degree criminal sexual conduct as a second-degree felony, which can carry a sentence of eight years. However, the plea agreement set Quinata’s sentencing range at one to five years.
Stella Damasus
I am at peace with myself – Stella Damasus
Nollywood star actress Stella Damasus on Wednesday signed a multi-million naira fashion label deal with “SDA Collection” as the Brand Amabassdor of Amvictorious, a Houston Texas, USA based fashion label company which creates unique, one-of-a kind American-made lifestyle products for brides, babies, men, women lifestyle amongst other products, in Lagos.
The ceremony, which was presided over by the VP International Logistics, Mr. Edgar Dominguez, saw an elated Stella shed tears of joy as she thanked her stars for the privilege of identifying with a world class brand.
She took time out after the ceremony to speak to Showtime Celebrity on the new deal as well as her exploits in the acting business.
Brand
You mentioned sometime ago that you don’t brand every product that comes your way. What’s the reason for the rejection?
There are certain things I don’t like to talk about. But the truth is, I only look out for things that will benefit me in the long run. And one of the things that puts me off from some of these contracts is the attachment of a time frame.
For instance, a one year, two year deal is unacceptable to me.
I have been discussing for the past two months with the management of AM Victorious. We have spelt out terms and conditions for this deal.
My lawyer as well as my manager who is currently in America looked at the project thoroughly and we found out that it’s beneficial to both parties.
In terms of agreement and duration of the contract, its okay. So many other brands have approached me in the past but because of the unfavourable terms and conditions, I turned my back on such deals.
I don’t want to start a journey that will end in two years. It takes a longer period to make impact on something. Moreover, it’s not easy to represent a brand and help that brand become a market leader.
What I agreed with the company is that instead of making it a duration thing, let us make it a life-long business plan. My business plan is to make money and also get myself involved in something that will be beneficial to me. So, this deal is beneficial to me as well as it is beneficial to AmVictorious. We are not into this deal based on duration. I’m also building a relationship that will last in my lifetime and also allow my children benefit from it.
That’s the reason I accepted the deal, and why I haven’t accepted other contracts that came my way in the past. The fact that the Amvictorious is giving me an opportunity to do business with them that can last for a lifetime is a factor.
Company
How do you feel about becoming the brand ambassador of Amvictorious?
I’m excited and I looked forward to it.
I actually flew into Lagos from Abuja to seal the deal. It’s very important that finally, I have seen it come to pass. This is the first time I would be signing a contract of this nature before the media; to publicly identify with a product.
I’m humbled knowing that there are a million and one other celebrities out there, who are more popular than I am; celebrities who are doing bigger and greater things internationally than I am.
So for the company to chose me over these celebrities not just as a Nigerian but for the whole of Africa, means that I should continue doing the positive things that I have been doing.
I’m honoured that Amvictorious singled me out to be part of this project. For me, it’s God’s blessing because I have been praying for something that I can be proud of. And today, my dream has come true. I’m very excited.
News
Stella Damasus is into acting, music and fashion. What are you doing at the moment?
I’m involved in a lot of things. I’ve just finished the final audition for my foundation: Stella Damasus Art Foundation where I am offering a three-month training for talented young Nigerians free of charge in the areas of acting and singing.
I’ve also just finished auditioning applicants for the second session. I did the first session last year, and I have graduated some people. I also have a new company, which is based in Abuja. We are doing a lot of things ranging from organising seminars to producing movies.
We organised a seminar in Cameroon recently , and after the seminar, we decided to make a movie for the people to see how quality movies are done. We are currently editing the movie titled: “The Unspoken”. It will be out very soon.
I am also doing a documentary now, which is very dear to my heart. And when it commences I will let the press know about it. My new deal with Amvictorious took a lot of my time . We had series of meetings and consultations. The company is planning to set up a branch in Abuja. All these things took a lot of my time.
At the moment, I’m a columnist with PM News. I make sure that I write my column every Wednesday in PM News.
I’m trying to be the best I can be in whatever that I’m doing.
TV Show
For sometimes now, your have not been regular on screen. What happened?
I’ve done three movies that are yet to hit the market. I did “Behind Close Doors” Part 3 and 4”. I shot the movie about three years ago.
I don’t know why it has not been released into the market up till now. I also did “Bent Arrows” a Lancelot Imasuen production which is yet to be released too. And recently, I did “Two Bride and a Baby” by Blessing Effiong,”. The premiere has been done at the cinemas.
The most important thing is not about flooding my face in movies that would make me a better person. Within this period, I went back to school to study acting in the UK. In fact, I’m actually going back there very soon.
I want to improve on my acting skill and my diction. I must continue to avail myself of the opportunity of being retrained.
Recently too my production company did a 13 episode TV Show called “Changing Life”, showing on AIT, OSTV, UK and Ghana. Soon we will begin airing it in Canada.
Right now, I’ll soon start shooting the second season of the show as well.
When you have all these projects in front of you, I need time to sort out my life, business and my children.
My first daughter is going to be thirteen, in August, while my second daughter will be ten too. I need time to stay with my children. I want to be part of their growing up.
I take out a few months in a year, do the things I need to do, and go back to tender my children. I try not to expose them to the public, until they have come of age and decide what to do with their lives. Whether they want to become stars like their mum, is left to them. Paying attentions to my kids is very important to me. That is why I’m not so particular about featuring in movies nowadays.
Music
All these projects in your hands suggests that your music career is suffering?
Not really. My music is not suffering. I’m not a recording artiste, but I own a band and I still do my live performances. I don’t go to night clubs to perform, instead I perform at weddings, product launching, naming ceremonies and all that. You might not see me on screen doing music, because I’m concentrating on my band now.
For the past one year, I have been working on my own songs, trying to arrange them well because after over 15 years in the industry, my fans are expecting something good from me.
I have to be careful not to come out with something that will not meet their expectations. And before the end of the year and by God’s grace I will drop two singles.
Industry
When you look back today, what would you say may have gone either wrong or right in your acting career?
I don’t ever regret anything that I have done or gone through. They are all part of my working experiences. I like the pace at which my career have gone. And if after 17 years of being in an industry and I’m still so relevant that people still believe in me and want me to endorse their products, then, it means that God dictates my pace. I can’t run faster than my legs can take me.
Since I surrendered myself and my career to God, He’s been able to order my steps. I’m not allowed to be everywhere. I’m only at places where I have to be attended to. I don’t have any regret at all. I’m happy the way my career has turned out. I’m happy with the pace with which I’m going.
life
Over the years, how have you been able to cope with the temptations and criticisms associated with acting?
If you have asked me this question ten years ago, I would have answered it. But after more than 17 years in the industry, I don’t bother anymore.
They call me old layer now, since I’m not among the hottest and freshest actresses around. They have those they run after now.
I’ve been able to carry myself in the industry in such a way that God has been providing for me and my children.
So, I don’t succumb to male’s advances because of money or fame. The small fame that God has given to me, I’m contented with it.
How is your present love life?
I love Jesus. I’m in love with Jesus and He loves me so, more than anything else in this world. I’m happy.
Would you say, you have been unlucky in marriage?
I don’t know, God has an answer to the question. But I’m loving my life right now, and I love the way things have turned out for me.
Bridal registry
Bridal registry trends reflect old and new.
Amanda Davis grew up listening to stories of her grandmother’s beloved china. When her grandmother surprised her by giving those cherished pieces to Davis to celebrate her own wedding, the precious gift marked a dream come true.
With more than 360,000 patterns in stock, Replacements’ bridal registry staff hears from brides looking for something old and something new. The company receives requests for a mix of discontinued heirloom patterns that have been in families for generations, along with those being produced today. As for current trends, many dinnerware manufacturers are refocusing their pattern mix around brides’ changing preferences.
“For the last six years, bridal registrations shifted to more casual everyday dinnerware, but recently we are experiencing a resurgence of brides in their twenties returning to fine china for the clean lines and versatility,” says Robin Long, Replacements’ vice president of product marketing and business development. “Shades of white are a staple on the tables of new brides and offer a great canvas to add seasonal accent plates which can give a table a whole new look without purchasing an entire new pattern.”Long adds that among current patterns, platinum trim patterns are the best sellers, but gold trim patterns are also high on the list for millennial brides.
“Some of the biggest trends we’re seeing are designs inspired by nature, such as flowers and birds. Bridal patterns are moving away from neutrals and pastels; color is everywhere,” Long says. “Some of the hottest colors right now include turquoise, lime green and tangerine tango, which the experts at Pantone named color of the year.”
For brides like Davis, opting for “something old,” Replacements’ bridal registry marks a valuable resource in tracking down cherished older pieces.
“We’re one of the few retailers brides can depend on for help filling out heirloom patterns because of the breadth and depth of our discontinued pattern inventory,” says Long. “Because we offer a mix of old and new patterns, Replacements’ bridal selection is truly unmatched. We’ve put together a group of associates to specifically handle all registry requests. Since this team is familiar with our bridal customers, we can offer more personalized attention. It’s almost like having your own personal shopper.”
Foreign brides
Taiwan lawmaker’s comments on foreign brides sparks protest.
A lawmaker’s suggestion that Taiwan men were “abandoning” local women for foreign brides sparked a protest by advocacy groups at parliament on Friday.
A lawmaker’s suggestion that Taiwan men were “abandoning” local women for foreign brides sparked a protest by advocacy groups at parliament on Friday.
Lawmaker Chang Show-foong made the comments in parliament on Thursday, calling on the government to consider subsidies for Taiwan’s “leftover women.”
Groups representing women and immigrants that took part in the protest at the legislature demanded an apology from Chang.
Taiwan’s women were struggling because of discrimination, not because they cannot find partners, they said.
“Single women and foreign brides are all good women, and we are united in wanting reforms to protect human rights and banish inequality,” said Lin Shih-fang of the Awakening Foundation, a women’s rights group.
Official data shows 427,000 foreign wives residing in Taiwan, compared to 31,800 foreign husbands at the end of 2011.
However, in the 20-49 age group, single men still outnumber single women by over 500,000.
UK
A BRIDE-to-be has postponed her wedding after paying more than £3,000 to give her pet lizard chemotherapy.
Lizzie Griffiths found bearded dragon George had head cancer after adopting him from a rescue centre last year.
She refused to have him put down and told fiance Chris Fisher the cash they had saved for their wedding would pay for cancer treatment. Teacher Lizzie, 25, of Purley, South London, said: “Chris knows George will always come first.
“I fell in love with George the minute I saw him and knew I’d do anything to look after him properly.
“So right now we can’t afford a wedding.”
George is in remission after his treatment — the first chemotherapy for a bearded dragon in the UK. Chris said: “He’s Lizzie’s No1.”
Bridal
The institution of marriage is alive and well in this area, judging by the reception for an annual bridal fair in downtown Mount Airy.
For around five hours Saturday, Old North State Winery was transformed into a veritable smorgasbord of products, services and ideas — all designed to provide everything a couple needs to chart a course toward marital bliss.
About 35 brides-to-be were on hand to check out what some 20 vendors had to offer in the way of clothing, food, photography, music, makeup, limo and other transportation, printing, flowers, honeymoon getaways and more. One special attraction was a fashion show showcasing all types of wedding attire, from bridesmaids’ dresses to flowing wedding gowns.
Wedding services
Kaela Hodges of Mount Airy and her fiancé, James Rodgers of Pilot Mountain, were among the couples who visited various vendor stations set up on multiple floors of the winery. It served as home base for the event that also encompassed other local businesses.
“There is a good mix,” Hodges said of the various displays she and Rodgers encountered along the way.
“It’s nice to see some local vendors,” she added of the wide array of wedding services and products to be found in the greater Mount Airy area as opposed to having to travel to out-of-town locations such as Greensboro.
Hodges and Rodgers are planning a “rustic” wedding on June 22, 2013. They attended Saturday’s bridal fair mainly to get information about wedding photographers, but also were able to integrate other items that will help with the big day.
“Everything we need,” Hodges said.
Lynch
Meanwhile, Misty Lynch, a resident of the King area who attended Saturday’s event with her mother, Shirley Lynch, had one major objective in mind: “Good ideas!”
Lynch said the fair offered “a chance to see what other girls are doing and kind of just talk about the wedding — see what things are available in this area.”
As she strolled through the first floor of the winery carrying an armful of brochures and other materials, Lynch mentioned that she had booked a local photographer for her wedding to Matthew Brozovich scheduled on May 12.
“It has everything,” the out-of-town visitor said of the bridal fair and her appreciation for having access to an array of vendors all under one roof. Lynch also mentioned how it catered to weddings of all types, from the “do-it-yourself” variety all the way up to the ultra-lavish.
“This venue here is so nice,” Lynch added of Old North State Winery and her general fondness for the Mount Airy vicinity — including its wedding infrastructure.
Wedding Spending
Wedding Spending
Saturday’s bridal fair came one day after two websites dedicated to weddings released the results of a survey on the costs of tying the knot, based on responses from nearly 18,000 U.S. brides who were married in 2011. It shows that couples and/or their family members will spend about $27,000 on weddings, not including the honeymoon.
While that level of splurging might not reflect that of local couples, weddings continue to command special consideration where the purse strings are concerned despite a tough economy, several persons at Saturday’s fair said.
“I think people are smarter with their money, but still willing to go all-out,” said Jenna Claxton-Puckett, coordinator for the fair. “They still want to have that lavish event.”
Wedding booked
An example of that was evident at one eye-catching display Saturday manned by personnel of the Primland resort in Patrick County, Va. Although it long has been known as a hunting resort spanning some 12,000 acres in Claudville and Meadows of Dan, Primland is increasingly becoming a wedding/honeymoon destination, according to Dana Puckett, its in-house group sales manager.
The resort offers luxury accommodations in a remote setting, including a 26-room lodge with an observatory, an indoor pool, gourmet food and packages available for both weddings, receptions and honeymoons.
Puckett mentioned a wedding booked there next weekend which will include the men playing golf and riding all-terrain vehicles through the surrounding countryside during the day, while the women in the party enjoy the resort’s full-service spa facilities.
“Everybody’s been kind of interested,” she said while handing out informational packets on the resort. As Puckett did so, a video showcasing its amenities played on a high-definition television screen behind her.
People
Closer to home, most people would not see a relationship between Mount Airy Museum of Regional History and weddings. But Nancy Davis, a representative of the facility who also was among Saturday’s exhibitors, said it hosts about 20 such marriage-related events each year.
Museum facilities including a courtyard, annex and conference room can be booked for receptions or wedding ceremonies.
“We’ve had quite a few stop by and ask about what we are renting,” Davis reported.
Meanwhile, clothing is always a key consideration for a wedding, and a vendor station manned by Tommy Poole of F. Rees Clothing in Mount Airy seemed to be one of the key stops Saturday. “We have had a good response,” Poole said.
He added that spring is a busy season for F. Rees — not only because of weddings, but high school proms — and the store tries to prepare accordingly.
“We have hundreds and hundreds of tuxedos,” Poole said.
Puckett-Claxton, the fair coordinator, indicated that Saturday’s event was successful for all concerned.
“We’re definitely pleased with the turnout.”
Brides
Skewed sex ratio in Gujarat: No tribal brides for Gujarat boys.
Buying a tribal bride may no longer be easy for boys from upper caste communities that have low sex ratios. Tribals across Gujarat are increasingly resentful of their daughters marrying into communities with few girls because of female foeticide.
The Garasiya tribals of north Gujarat have even issued a diktat to the members not to marry girls outside the community. The leaders met in Shamlaji earlier this month and decided to bar girls from marrying Patels, Brahmins and other communities. A family that allows such a marriage would be fined Rs 50,000. On the face of it, the tribals say they don’t want to create a shortage of girls in their own community, but their fear may stem from deeper factors.
“Members of Adivasi Dungarsinh Garasiya Samaj are often offered cash and jewellery to lure them into marrying their daughters outside the community. At this rate, a time will soon come when our boys will find it difficult to get a bride,” says Kalji Kataria, a tribal leader from Sabarkantha. Kataria say 100-odd Garasia girls were married to Patel boys in Mehsana in last one year alone.
Well-known tribal activist Gandesh Devy says, “There are a number of aspects to the resentment. Tribals want to Sankritize and many have even taken on ‘Patel’ as a surname. But they fear losing their lands. A non-tribal can’t own tribal land unless he is married to a tribal. There have been instances where a non-tribal husband has abandoned his tribal wife after getting ownership of land.”
He adds tribals are also upset about their daughters being treated like lifelong maids in many cases.
Community leaders speculate that at least 20,000 tribal girls have married outside in the past few years. Marriage agents have mushroomed all across Gujarat’s eastern tribal belt. Interestingly, all tribal districts in Gujarat have a healthy child sex ratio of between 900 and 975 girls per 1,000 boys.
Tribal MLAs like Dr Anil Joshiyara of Bhiloda and Amarsinh Vasava of Jhagadia said they were present at the Shamlaji meeting.
“This is a trend which can alter the very character of tribal society if it goes unchecked,” Joshiyara said.

Dubai: Russian women in the UAE have launched a social group aimed at extending support to female expatriates facing difficulities.
Rossiyanke, which held its first gathering at the Mina Al Salam hotel in Dubai on Wednesday night, is the first social group for Russian women in the UAE.
Tatiana Al Aroud, a UAE resident for more than 12 years and the moving force behind the group, told Gulf News that Rossiyanke will serve as a social organisation that Russian women living in the UAE can fall back on.
“We want to host free events everyday for women and their children. We also want to offer Arabic, English, and Russian language classes,” she said.
Tatiana, who was chosen president of the group, said: “Now we have the chance to meet with each other and talk about our culture and at the same time we want to explain to Russian women in the UAE what Islam means, what the emirates mean, and how to live here.”
Membership drive
Currently, about 50 women have signed up to become members of the group, but it is counting on wider representation in the coming few weeks.
A newcomer to the UAE, Arzu Esmaylova, welcomed the support the organisation is offering Russian women and those from all the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
“I think it’s good idea, I am happy to be here. Maybe they will help me find good schools or tell me where there are good job opportunities.” she said.
Another Dubai resident, Anastasiya Yermakova from Belarus, said she was looking forward to the chance to meet more women who share her cultural background,
“I think there will be good events happening. Some events for charities also, that’s what I would be interested in attending.” Yermakova said.

UKRAINIAN BRIDES
A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.
Mignon McLaughlin
Poets have glorified love since long ago. They depicted it as a vivid and powerful feeling, which could win all misfortunes. Poems, ballads, theater performances and many other things were making their impression on young girls, who wanted to marry a respectable man and get an honorable status of a young wife. Since then nothing has changed. Nowadays girls have the same desire to raise children, take care of their husbands and live long and happily. This plot is a topical one and it takes place in any part of this world including Ukraine. Ukrainian brides are looking for husbands not less than the rest of girls. They have many advantages, which can win the heart of any modern man. Unlike foreign Ukrainian brides can do almost everything. They are perfect cookers, keep house well and are exceptional mothers. Therewith they are beauties! What man will refuse to have SUCH wife? It is not surprising that more and more foreigners come to Ukraine and try to find here a sweet woman, who will be the best present for the rest of their lives. Russian girls know about this fact and begin their hunting for a husband. Competition is great, I must say. Modern hot girls have to strike men not only by their appearance, but also by their intellect, wisdom, humor and many others. Foreigners are aware of the fact Ukrainian brides are ready to do almost everything in order to marry and acquire citizenship of some developed country. That is why the former can afford to choose. At this moment, a real fuss begins. Girls are trying to surpass each other in any possible activity, they struggle for this place under the sun, because they are not sure, there will be a second chance. Well, any sensible person can understand them. The main thing in this “husband race” is that each girl should remember about the most important point, without which there will not be a happy marriage. It is LOVE! If a girl establishes a priority in a right way, she will be definitely happy with her husband, because no rush for profit can give you joy, fun and harmony. Dear Ukrainian brides, please, remember that!
